Red Ribbon Week

This week is Red Ribbon Week at CMS! In support of Red Ribbon Week, students signed a “Drug-Free Way to Be” banner and watched skits put on by the peer leaders.  I asked you guys to submit your writing pieces to me about your drug free lifestyle. I selected a few of those works and they are posted below! Thanks to everyone who submitted their work. I am so proud of all of you and your anti-drug campaign.

Today, all students were asked to wear red to show their support for a drug free lifestyle. I took a picture of each class sporting their red outfits and they are posted below. I hope all of you have a great weekend. Oh and ROLL TIDE! ;)

                                             Drug-Free Writing Pieces:

Drug Free           By: Mia Matt, 5th period

I am drug free, it’s the way to be. It gave me a chill to realize that drugs can kill.

You should be too. Drugs will hurt you!

Drugs make you become someone else, anyone but yourself.

Drugs can do many things, but most of all they hurt your brain.

They make you dizzy and drowsy, but also make you feel lousy.

There are many reasons this is the way to be, and they are why I am drug free!

Drug Free is the Way to Be                               By: Carter Williams, 4th period

Drug free is the way to be because alot of people that are on drugs couldn’t even write this paragraph I am about to write. If you do drugs it will affect your school work, alot of your friends won’t like you anymore, you might get cancer, and you will be very confused if you take drugs. Smoking can ruin your face. Our school watched a video yesterday and it showed a picture of a man who didn’t have a chin. The bottom part of his mouth was in the middle part of his chin. So that’s why you shouldn’t do drugs. DRUG FREE IS THE WAY TO BE!

Drug Free is the Way to Be!                                     By:Lindsay Hagler, 3rd period

I love being drug free because when you are on drugs you do lots of bad things. For example, drug addicts sometimes drive while they are on drugs and they get in wrecks most of the time. Sometimes drug addicts try to stop but to them it is so hard to quit drugs. When people do drugs and they want to get a job they have to take a drug test. I want to have a good life when I grow up and I want to go to Auburn University and become a vet. If I was tempted to do drugs I would not fulfill my dream. That is why drug free is the way to be!

By: Animesh Mahapatra, 4th period

Here is my advice to you: DON’T DO DRUGS!!! Drugs can seriously mess up your life and your life will never be the same. Drugs can create social problems for people, and you can become addicted. You start to spend too much money. Drugs can make you do bad things just to get them like stealing. Drugs can also cause physical problems. Alcohol kills brain cells. Cigarettes and tobacco products can give you lung or mouth cancer. Drugs are especially bad for kids who are still growing and less immune to them like adults. Please just say NO to drugs.

Thanks to all my classes for your participation. See you all on Monday.

Technology Is Our Teacher

At Challenger Middle, we are SO lucky to have all sorts of technology at our fingertips. Technology is now implemented in daily life, so why not implement it in the classroom?!

Last week, my English classes had the pleasure of using the traveling laptop classroom to review pronouns. It is an amazing sight to see 28-30 students staring into their own computer screen and working with their own personal computer. How lucky we are.

Today all of my Science classes had the pleasure of playing Jeopardy to review for tomorrow’s test. I wish I got to play Jeopardy with controllers, a life size screen, and the actual Jeopardy music when I was in school. The scoreboard we used today was electronic and kept up with all of the teams’ points. Although I couldn’t be the game show host and photographer all-in-one today, I did take some pictures of the screen and the game module. Next time I will grab some students in action with Jeopardy. Students, share these pictures with your parents. Did they have this kind of fun while preparing for a test?

Technology is not only fun for the students, but it allows the teacher to use a different style of teaching. So, can technology teach? Of course it can!! This wonderful blog would not be in existence without today’s technology. Technology allows us to email and communicate effectively with others. Cameras allow me to share these fabulous pictures with you. Computers allow you to research, design, and even view your grades! It provides us with a free and quick flow of information to benefit higher learning. Computers even assisted me with getting the job at CMS. I filled out the application for HSV City Schools online! Thank goodness for technology :)

We have technology present in our classroom that we may take for granted. For example, the projector in our classroom allows all students to view the board and provides us with opportunities to watch presentations and educational movies. It’s not just for your daily starters students. So what do you guys think? Can technology teach? Does technology keep you interested? Let me know your thoughts.

Technology does not and will not replace the teacher. It just enhances our ability to inspire the learner and stimulate young minds! Have a great Monday and brainstorm ways technology has impacted your educational experiences. Share them on the blog, or tomorrow in class.

The Movement of Air

Science today was exciting…..and kind of smothering! We set up shop in the lab to investigate the movement of hot and cold air. Our materials included: 2 convection tubes, ice, hot water, a flashlight, and punk sticks. Yes, the same sticks you use to light fireworks. The punk sticks were our smoke source and allowed us to see the movement of the air. They also are to blame for our stinky clothes and smoky lab. :)

We started off investigating the movement of cold air. We placed the ice in one convection tube. From there, we carefully put the smoking punk stick through a funnel connected to the convection tube. We then turned out the lights and shined a flashlight through the tubes to see how the air moved. We found that cold air moved very slowly and hovered around the ice. It looked very heavy and thick.  Also, a lot of the air was pushed out through the funnel, not the top of the tube.  This happened because heavy, dense air sinks.

We then repeated the entire process with hot water. Almost immediately, the smoke from our punk stick began rising out of the top of our convection tube. The air was moving quickly and had a wispy or light look about it. This makes sense because we know that light, less dense air will always rise. There was also a lot of moisture around the convection tube. A few students recognized this process as evaporation.

I was very pleased with every class today in the lab. Thank you students. You all did a very nice job in your investigation.

Apply what you know. If earth’s surface was cold, what would happen to the air above it? If the surface was hot, what would happen to the air above it? Do you think air takes on the temperature of the surface beneath it? Think about it and be ready to discuss this on Monday!

“Pop” Personal Pronouns

music.gif

Hey students and parents!

In English today we began discussing personal pronouns. When I told the students what the focus of today’s lesson was, they all had a kind of  “ugh” look on their faces. However, we discovered that recognizing personal pronouns in daily activities proved to be fun and entertaining.

With one of The Beatles album as my aide, we played the song Love Me Do in class. As we listened to the lyrics, the students made a tally mark each time they heard a personal pronoun. Many students expressed to me that they had the same album at home. Now this could get fun! Students, explain to your parents what a personal pronoun is. Then challenge them to find the number of personal pronouns used in Love Me Do, just as we did in class.

Tonight I want you to play your favorite “pop” song and count how many personal pronouns are in the lyrics. Let me know the numbers you get and with what song.

**Study for your Spelling/Vocabulary test as you listen**

Question: How many personal pronouns were used in this post? The first person with the correct answer will receive a homework pass.

To Hand-Gel or Not to Hand-Gel

My 5th period English class loves hand-gel. Not only because it is lunch time and we all want clean hands, but because hand gels apparently now come in very pleasant scents. I have decided to dedicate today’s blog to my 5th period class.

Currently, we are studying word derivatives and looking over vocabulary. So guys, find your vocabulary words in context in my passage about hand-gel: (Remember we talked about italics too)

My 5th period class starts off with a few minutes in the classroom, then lining up for lunch. As we leave, everyone grabs a dab of hand gel. We all want clean hands, not the antonym of clean, which is dirty. Thus far, we have found our hand-gel to be very effective in killing 99.9% of germs.

We have decided whoever came up with the concept of hand gel is an absolute genius! Yes, we understand that hand gel was derived from soap, but using the gel saves us a lot of time because we don’t have to wait in line to wash our hands.

Our brand of choice in the classroom happens to be Germ-X. Those people at Germ-X definitely know what they are doing and have specialized in making the perfect and ultimate hand-gel. Not only does it kill harmful germs and bacteria, but the gel also helps us retain the moisture in our hands. It’s a two-in-one package. The words hand-gel and clean are synonymous in this class!

Now, we aren’t so sure that the term Germ-X can be found in our book’s glossary, but we do know that the term Germ-X is well understood in Ms. Hyche’s 5th period English class!

This passage wasn’t written because I want you to learn more about hand-gel,but I want you all to realize how important it is to be able to read your vocabulary words in context, and understand their meaning. Hope this passage helped. Students, good luck on your spelling and definitions test! Make sure you study hard.

Now Presenting…..STORMS!

The past two days in science, the students have been working on a storms poster to present to their classmates. We have been getting to the bottom of how, where, and why storms occur.

Students, impress your parents with your knowledge! Explain to them the difference in a funnel cloud and tornado. Maybe you want to tell them why a vortex will shrink horizontally and stretch out vertically. If you loved the talk about hurricanes today, tell your parents about the eye and eye wall of a hurricane. Or really challenge your parents! Do they know the scale we use to measure the intensity of a hurricane? What about a tornado?

Pictures are posted below of group posters and presentations. Enjoy! Thanks for the multitude of comments so far. Keep it up guys. You are making your science teacher proud! :) Tomorrow be ready to go to the lab and find out which heats and cools faster…..soil or water?

A Storm Brewin’

What a great day it was in Science! My 1st, 2nd, and 6th period classes had the pleasure of creating storms in a bottle. They did an amazing job. I am posting some of the pictures to share with everyone. Check out the vortices that were created. Parents, hopefully after today’s class you will no longer get the “nothing” response when you ask your students what they did in school today. Get em thinking! Ask them to explain to you what a vortex is. Below are some pictures for you to enjoy!
